How this course works

This "mini-course" on Spiritual Discernment is divided into 5 separate module. Each module touches on a distinct and important element of spiritual discernment. Each module in turn is made up of several parts: an overview of the module, 2 or 3 lessons, a practical exercise, and a meditation guide to bring it all to prayer.

The modules are designed to be completed in sequence, at your own pace. Each module and lesson contains material that is appropriate for those who consider themselves "beginners" in the spiritual life. There is also material for those who are a bit more familiar with "spiritual theology", and then even some writings from the Fathers, Saints, and Doctors of the Church that can be relevant to those who have been long committed to their walk with the Lord.

Perhaps the best way to go through this material (and all other spiritual-like reading) is by following the admonition given by St. Maximus the Confessor:

If anything in these chapters should prove useful to the soul, it will be revealed to the reader by the grace of God, provided that he reads, not out of curiosity, but in the fear and love of God. If a man reads this or any other work not to gain spiritual benefit but to track down matter with which to abuse the author, so that in his conceit he can show himself to be the more learned, nothing profitable will ever be revealed to him in anything.
Saint Maximus the Confessor, in his introduction to his four hundred chapters on love
